case study: Fortieth Street STS rehabilitation

City of Toronto, Ontario

The City of Toronto, the largest city in Canada, operates an extensive network of local and trunk sewers. In 2016, Andrews.engineer (A.E) and CIMA+ were retained to develop the preliminary and detailed design of the rehabilitation of the Fortieth Street Sanitary Trunk Sewer (STS). The Fortieth Street STS is located in the Brown’s Line area in the extreme southwest corner of Toronto. The sewer system includes 970 m of sewers (525 mm to 1200 mm) and 16 manholes. The rehabilitation project included the following activities:

  • Preliminary design of the rehabilitation scheme, including evaluation of alternatives, review of impact on hydraulic performance and development of bypass pumping schemes
  • Detailed design of sewer and manhole rehabilitation, including CIPP lining and manhole spray-lining
  • Contract administration and site inspection
  • Post construction services

A.E provided inspection and other field investigation services to verify existing conditions and dimensions of the sewers and manholes, confirmed access routes, developed traffic management plans and prepared bypass pumping requirements. A tender package was prepared and reviewed including all related standards and specifications, detailed scope of work and bills of quantities.

Due to the lessons learned from previous rehabilitation projects, the City had concerns regarding manhole rehabilitation details. A.E engaged with the client through various discussions to address their concerns and provided alternatives and options. A.E is also involved in site inspection and warranty inspections during the construction phase.
